Making Jamu: Indonesia's Elixir

Jamu is a well-known and loved Balinese juice that is a traditional herbal medicine. This refreshing drink is really simple to make and delicious to drink, and at the same time works wonders for healing the body.
Although today it is made in a variety of ways throughout Bali, its core ingredients are ginger and turmeric.
Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, believed to have anti-ageing effects that help revitalise the skin as well as boosting the immune system.
Likewise, ginger has long been used in many cultures for its medicinal properties, from relieving pain to soothing your digestive system. Its compound ginerole is thought to reduce inflammation, ease pain for chronic conditions and so much more.
Follow our four simple steps for a taste of Bali that is sure to spice up your lockdown life and support good health!
Still water or coconut water (for added electrolytes) - 4 cups
Fresh ginger (peeled) - 20 grams
Fresh Turmeric (peeled) - 125 grams
Palm sugar or honey - to taste
Black pepper - a pinch
Step one: SLICE
Slice the fresh lime or lemon into wedges and set aside.
Thinly slice the peeled root ginger and set aside.
Step two: GRATE
Finely grate the peeled root turmeric and set aside.
Step three: BOIL
Fill a saucepan with the water and bring to a rolling boil.
Add the sugar and continue stirring until melted, when the liquid will turn completely transparent.
Next, stir in your grated turmeric, being careful not to get this on your clothes!
Continue to boil this for 5 minutes.
Add in the sliced ginger.
Allow your Jamu to boil for another 5 minutes.
Step four: SIEVE
It’s almost ready! Carefully strain your hot liquid with a sieve.
To drink hot, simply pour into a mug and squeeze a wedge of fresh lime or lemon over the top.
To drink cold, leave the citrus aside for now until you’re ready to serve.
