This month, we dive into the world of STELAR's founder for our 'Lorna Loves' series, discovering Lorna's affinity with the art of Miguel Covarrubias.

Born in Mexico in 1904, Covarrubias became known for his pioneering work as both an ethnologist and an artist.

Similar to our founder Lorna, he had a natural curiosity for social and cultural traditions, throwing himself into day-to-day life while learning to appreciate village and family customs, unique socio-cultural habits and indigenous belief systems.

In 1930, Covarrubius travelled to Bali, where he became fascinated by its wealth of culture and traditions, capturing the Balinese way of life through the eyes of a foreigner, using his modern, stylistic expression in a highly poignant, personal and sensitive way.

His unique illustrations were recognised and published by top international magazines including Vogue, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, and his book, ‘Island of Bali’, first published in 1937, is still regarded to this day as the original Bali ‘bible’.
